Eco-Innovation and Environmental Degradation: A Case Study for Mexico, 1990–2020
Eco-innovation aims to develop new technologies that reduce environmental impact, potentially mitigating environmental degradation. However, evidence shows that eco-innovation can have both positive and negative effects on the ecological footprint across different countries. This study examines the effects of eco-innovation, GDP per capita, squared GDP per capita, natural resource rents, and financial development on environmental degradation—measured through the ecological footprint—in Mexico from 1990 to 2020, using an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model. The empirical results suggest that financial development reduces the ecological footprint in both the short and long run, while GDP per capita contributes to an increase only in the short term. In contrast, natural resource rents, squared GDP per capita, and eco-innovation do not exhibit significant effects. This study is a pioneer in analyzing this relationship in Mexico, providing a basis for future cross-country comparisons and contributing to a broader global understanding of the issue.
