Abstract

The Orchidaceae family includes protected species illegally traded in Mexico. But an intervention with a sustainable approach applied to traders can contribute to the protection of the species. The objective was to identify the wild orchids commercialized in the Isabel Díaz de Castilla market in Tenango de las Flores in order to apply conservation strategies that include the merchants. Surveys were applied for one year to the merchants to collect data on the orchids traded. 137 species and 61 genera such as Epidendrum, Prostechea and Encyclia were recorded. 85% were of epiphytic habit that come mostly from mountain cloud forest or evergreen medium forest from Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Veracruz states. Endangered species such as Lycaste skinneri and Rhynchostele uroskinneri were identified and traded.  The applied workshop made it possible to highlight the importance of protecting orchids to avoid economic impacts for merchants and help with the conservation of these species.
