Abstract

Various studies present water scarcity as a complex and multifactorial problem. This project analyzes water availability for domestic use in the Pixquiac river micro-basin in Veracruz. Monthly flow measurements at three dams in the micro-basin were analyzed, and the water users' perception and opinion regarding its availability were measured. It was observed that although the water flowing in the rivers has decreased, reaching critical levels during the dry season, the volume extracted from the dams to supply the city of Xalapa has not varied. Most users have perceived scarcity for at least a decade, mainly during April and May, and identify deforestation and population growth as the main causes, followed by climate change. They believe that the scarcity and its impacts will worsen soon. The results suggest that the decrease in availability is mainly due to reduced precipitation in the middle and upper areas of the micro-basin and a growing demand for the resource in the lower area.
