Abstract

Emissions of volatile organic compounds are capable of producing environmental problems such as smog and exacerbating climate change. This article analyzes how economic activity, secondary sector, foreign direct investment and population density can influence emissions of volatile organic compounds, through the spatial Durbin model, which considers the spatial dependence of individuals. This research uses the emissions of volatile organic compounds in the states of Mexico for the year 2018. Empirical evidence shows that the environmental Kuznets curve exists, and in addition to this, there is no empirical evidence of the existence of the polluting haven hypothesis and that states with higher population density reduce emissions of this pollutant.
