Abstract

The objective of this article is to explore the prevalence of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension in Mexico by federal entity and age group, and to analyze the impact of education-income levels on the probability of suffering from these conditions. Furthermore, a focused analysis of the state of Coahuila is conducted, given its high prevalence of obesity and comparatively elevated income levels relative to other states. This case is of particular interest for illustrating how the socioeconomic context can differentially influence health determinants. The methodology includes graphical analysis and the application of a probit model. The results indicate that higher levels of income and education increase the probability of obesity but decrease the likelihood of diabetes and hypertension. It is suggested that, in the case of obesity, the effect of income is due to increased food consumption, while for diabetes and hypertension, higher income and education lead to a substitution effect, where healthier foods are replaced by less healthy options.
